All you need to know of Aptitude Test

In the aptitude test, you face questions that test your fluid and crystal intelligence. Those that solve more questions in a shorter time will get a higher grading and better prospects of selection.

Fluid Intelligence

This tests your ability to develop a new perspective each time you face a problem. It checks how good you are at solving the situation you face. It involves three types of reasoning – Abstract, Spatial, and Visual reasoning.

Abstract Reasoning – In an abstract reasoning test, you will be called to identify patterns and rules of logic in a given situation. You must use these trends and pieces of information to arrive at an answer.

Spatial Reasoning – In spatial reasoning, you imagine how different orientation of things will help to minimize a problem. Even if it does not solve a problem, it gives a new perspective on a problem.

Visual Reasoning – Here, you undergo check for your ability to “see” things as it exists and use this information to solve problems. Visual reasoning ability has a direct relation to his or her overall intelligence.

By crystal intelligence, one shows how a person uses pre-existing knowledge to do work. It refers to how fast a person is able to relate to information and use it.

Language and Comprehension – This shows how well a person is able to communicate in a specific language. To understand a language, one must have a range of skills, capacities, knowledge, dispositions, and processes to derive meaning from signed, written, or spoken language. This type of crystal intelligence shows how ordered the mind of a person is.

Logical and Critical Reasoning – In this section, you undergo checks to find your ability to discern pattern and find a way forward. It checks your current grasp of knowledge and how you relate to different sections in a paragraph.

All questions you answer for the reasoning part is taken from passages given. You must go through all choices because more than one choice is possible. In the next section, you will see how to solve problems.

Problem Solving

You need to be good at problem solving to achieve great things. First, our attitude to problems needs revamping. Here are some aspects of problems that we must recognize.

  • They deal with things we do not particularly like.
  • Solving problems is time consuming.
  • It adds to our activity schedule when we already have many things to do.
  • Our future becomes uncertain due to problems.
  • It never seems to accept reality as it is.
  • Mostly, it keeps on staying.

Everyone wants to do away with problems. So, we try to get the fastest solution and then we realise that there was another solution that was easier. Did the situation become better or worse? What mistake are we doing here?

To be a problem solver, you need to have a methodical approach. By improving your method, you become a better problem solver. By doing more practice, we develop more confidence and so our speed increases. So, it is not the first solution but the best solution that one must choose.

Decision Making and Judgment

Judging is an ability to make a decision. You might be forming an opinion in an objective or authoritative way. This affects good sense and future action and is done with discretion. If one follows all these, one makes a good judgment.

Humans cannot make a perfect decision. Not being perfect, we move away from perfection in predictable ways that follow a specific system. Understanding the nature of these deviations forms the core of decision making. Once we understand limitations, we can form strategies so our decisions become more effective.

Testing at Different Levels

Within a hierarchy in an organisation, we do cognitive testing to see whether a person is able to understand all complexities in his or her job role. The levels of assessment get curated as per proficiency and role with each level needing a different set of skills and having different difficulty levels. We see different levels as given below:

Basic Level – When a task has a clear mandate and does not involve any decision making or analysis. This involves administrative and clerical roles.

Fair Level – Has ability to learn a job hands-on and do work that involves analysis. These are executive roles.

Medium Low Level – This person learns and forms opinions. He can do work related to decision making or problem solving. Usually, supervisory and functional roles fit into this group.

Medium High Level – Uses experience and data available to make inferences to help with key decisions. This role suits business heads and senior managerial persons.

High Level – Can handle ambiguous situations and come out with intelligent answers. He has high problem solving ability and high learning.  Strategists and leaders fit into this role.

Learning and Development

Use of cognitive ability test helps to predict how well a person will perform and how well he will learn the job. This test helps to integrate the performance of the company and contribute to its progress. A company can plan its strategy by seeing the capability of its workforce in these tests. This is a four step process that involves the following:

  1. Evaluate learning agility
  2. Fix approach to training
  3. Find out high potential people
  4. Succession planning

You can choose a standardised aptitude test from the library of the service provider. These tests are earmarked as per their competencies and job roles.

A candidate with a good aptitude is likely to bring about a solution in a structured and effective way. There is clear logic to his approach when doing work. This person is also good at communicating his thoughts and ideas. He performs analysis for identifying patterns and finding a relationship between them so his or her work is always error-free and has a high quality.

Tests to check the aptitude of a person either that needed or that present in a candidate helps employers choose a good candidate. This kind of benchmark test will range from basic tests to those specific to a work. So, you will always get the best person for the work.
